Truly Independent Canadian Cinema Alive and Well and to be Recognized at Montreal World Film Festival

Refrain, a feature about music and conjugal violence will screen at the Montreal World Film Festival this summer.

MONTREAL, QC - Apr 29, 2009 -- The Montreal World Film Festival has a mandate to foster and stimulate the development of quality cinema and to discover and encourage new talent. This mandate is upheld this year with the selection of Refrain to the World Film Festival's 2009 program.

Refrain is a feature film about violence, isolation, and the unyielding pull of freedom through music. The film explores the struggle of the independent musician through a story of modern cyclical violence. It is the first live-action feature film by writer/director Tyler Gibb who is best known internationally for his animated movies that include the hand-drawn animated epic, Minushi (2007).

ABOUT REFRAIN: Refrain, directed by Tyler Gibb, 2009, 104 minutes, Canada, English. Synopsis: Refrain is a dramatic narrative that follows the musical awakening of a young woman bound in an abusive relationship. Cast: Vidya Lutchman, Brad Carmichael, Rachelle Néron, Mark Waters, Vikki Wong.

ABOUT TYLER GIBB: Born in Montreal in 1976, Tyler Gibb's irreverent and prolific short animations have garnered viewership around the world. His 2007 animated feature, Minushi, premiered at Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival. Refrain marks Gibb's first official move into live-action, long-form, narrative.

ABOUT THE MONTREAL WORLD FILM FESTIVAL: The WFF is a FIAPF accredited international film festival that was founded in 1977. The 31st edition of the festival saw an attendance of 385,000 filmgoers. The 32nd edition of the festival will be held from Aug. 27th to Sep. 7th, 2009 in Montreal.
